Manchester City's loan system

Chelsea are notorious for the amount of players they have out on loan, with it hard to get an exact number on how many. Either way, the number is around the 30 mark. The season before it was 43, which has had a significant decrease on last season, with Frank Lampard seeming to be the man behind the decrease.

However, one team that doesn't get the media attention it should and goes quite under the radar with the amount of loan players it has is Manchester City.

This past season, Manchester City had x players out on loan, and that number is ever growing because of their owners, the City Football Group.

This article will go over who Manchester City have had out on loan in the 19/20 season or have already been sent out on loan for the 20/21 season, and who their owners are.

Who are they?

The City Football Group is a company that has control over many football clubs, and are under the ownership of Abu Dhabi United Group. It is also part owned by an American firm called Silver Lake and two Chinese firms called China Media Capital and CITIC Capital. Their aim was to own a team in each continent, with all of then having the word 'City' in their name.

Who do they own?

Obviously they own Manchester City, but also teams in many different countries. In the USA, they own New York City FC. They were the ones who helped found the club, when Don Garber, commissioner of the MLS, approached newly appointed Manchester City CEO Ferran Soriano about forming a club in the MLS (Major League Soccer). The team was unveiled in 2013 by Don Garber, and made it's MLS debut in 2017. Thus connection allowed the likes of Frank Lampard to move from Manchester City to New York City on loan, and also Jack Harrison's move to Manchester City.

They also fully own Melbourne City in Australia, formerly known as Melbourne Heart, and Uruguayan team Montevideo City Torque. They then own majority shares in Indian side Mumbai City, and Belgian second division side Lommel SK. They then most notably own a share in Spanish side Girona, a team in which a lot of Manchester City players joined on loan in the past seasons since they bought the share at the start of the 17/18 season. Five players joined Girona from Manchester City on loan in the 17/18 season. They also own shares in Chinese club Sichuan Jiuniu and Japanese side Yokohama F Marinos.

Manchester City loan a lot of these players out so that they can gain experience of first team football in the hope they can one day make it for Manchester City. Manchester City have two main affiliate clubs in Dutch second division side NAC Breda and Venezuelan side Atletico Venezuela CF.

Who is loaned out?

These are the players that Manchester City had loaned out last season, have already been loaned out for this season and are likely to leave on loan this season.

Zack Steffen -

The 25-year-old goalkeeper was bought in December 2018 from MLS side Columbus Crew, signing a five-year-deal, joining for a fee believed to be around £7 million, and officially joined City last summer. He was voted the MLS goalkeeper of the year for 2018, where he kept 10 clean sheets. He was immediately loaned out to Bundesliga side Fortuna Dusseldorf for the season, where he kept 2 clean sheets in 17 appearances. He played a more rotation role, making the same amount of appearances as fellow keeper Florian Kastenmeier. Unfortunately, Dusseldorf ended up getting relegated, after finishing second bottom in the Bundesliga, 1 point off the relegation play-off places and 6 off safety. He has made 17 appearances for the USA national team.

According to reports, Steffen is set to be part of Pep Guardiola's first team plans as backup to Ederson, with current backup goalkeeper Claudio Bravo set to join Real Betis following the end of his contract.

Issa Kabore -

Kabore is a 21-year-old right back who only joined the club this summer from Belgian Pro League side KV Mechelen, believed to be for a fee around £5 million pounds, and signed a five-year-deal. He was then immediately loaned back to Mechelen for the upcoming season.

He only came through at the club last season, making five appearances before the season in Belgium was curtailed. He had only joined them last summer from Rahimo FC in Burkina Faso.

Issa is an explosive full back, showing great pace and strength and is a brilliant ball carrier. He definitely has potential to be a very good player, and I could definitely see him in the Premier League, but unfortunately not at Manchester City.

Patrick Roberts -

Roberts is a 23-year-old winger, who joined City in the summer of 2015 from Fulham for a fee believe to be around £6.5 million. He broke out for Fulham as a 17-year-old in the 14/15 season, making 17 appearances accumulating 2 assists. Since joining Manchester City, he has been sent out on loan to four different clubs. He was first sent out on loan to Celtic, in which he spent two and a half seasons, between February 2016 to May 2018. He then spent the 18/19 season in Spain at Girona where he struggled, making 6 starts and 13 appearances off the bench. In the 19/20 season he spent the first half on loan at Norwich in the Premier League, but failed to make a single start before he was recalled and sent on loan to Middlesbrough. He helped them avoid relegation, making eight starts and two appearances off the bench.

A right inside forward primarily, Roberts is a tricky player who likes to dribble, and draws a lot of fouls, and has an eye for a key pass. You will usually see him on set pieces, however don't expect him to make much defensive contribution. He can also play centrally as an attacking midfielder, which is where Neil Warnock used him primarily towards the end of last season, and he excelled. So far he is still at City, but i would expect him to secure a loan move away in the near future.

Jack Harrison -

Jack Harrison is another 23-year-old winger, who joined City in January 2018 for a fee believed to be around £3.6 million pounds from New York City FC. He was then immediately sent out on loan to Middlesbrough for the res of the 17/18 season, where he made four substitute appearances, gaining 1 assist. He has then spent the last two seasons on loan at Leeds United, where he played 39 times in 18/19 getting 4 goals and three assists, and then building on that in the 19/20 season starting 45 out of the 46 games (coming off the bench for the one he didn't start), scoring six and creating eight. He has gone out on loan to Leeds again for the third season, with an option to buy at the end.

Harrison can play a variety of positions, playing primarily as a left midfielder, but can also play on both wings. really good with the ball at his feet and has an eye for a pass, Harrison is also capable of a clean long ball. I wouldn't expect him to play for City anytime soon, as it looks like he will join Leeds permanently this time next year.

Yangel Herrera -

Yangel Herrera is a 22-year-old centre midfielder, and joined City in February 2017 for an undisclosed fee from Atletico Venezuela. He has been on loan to three clubs since joining, linking up with New York City FC for the 2017 and 2018 MLS season. he then spent the second half of the 18/19 season on loan at SD Huesca in La Liga, and then went back to Spain last season on loan with Granada, helping them finish seventh and claim Europa League qualification for the first time in the club's history. He has now rejoined Granada for the 20/21 season on loan.

Herrera is the definition of an aggressive midfielder. He is played primarily as a defensive midfielder for Granada, but can be deployed a centre midfielder. He averaged 2.9 tackles per game last season, the second highest in La Liga last season. He had also committed more fouls than any other player in La Liga last season - with 90. He is key to Granada's midfield, as they use their tenacity in the middle of the pitch, where their aggressive medium block suffocates the opposition and use that to gain the ball back. Herrera has been tipped to potentially be Fernandinho's replacement, however to play under Guardiola he will need to improve his use of the ball.

Marlos Moreno -

Marlos Moreno is a 23-year-old Colombian winger who has been at City since August 2016, joining from Colombian side Atletico National. He has since been out on loan five times, spending the 16/17 season with Deportivo La Coruna, then the first half of the 17/18 season on loan at Girona, before spending the whole of 2018 in Brazil with Flamengo. He then spent the second half of the 18/19 season on loan at Mexican Santos Laguna, before spending the entirety of last season at Portuguese Portimonense, where he made sixteen appearances (eleven from the bench).

Erik Palmer-Brown -

Erik Palmer-Brown is a 23-year-old centre back who has been at City since January 2018, joining on a free transfer from MLS side Sporting Kansas, whom of which he came through their academy. The American has been on loan three times, spending the second half of the 17/18 season on loan at KV Kortrijk in Belgium. before going to NAC Breda in Holland for the 18/19 season, before going out on a two-year-loan (which he is now halfway through) to Austria Vienna, in you guessed it, Austria. He made twenty two appearances for them in the 19/20 season, and will be hoping to play more and become a main stay this upcoming season.

Claudio Gomes -

Claudio Gomes is a 20-year-old defensive midfielder, who joined City in July 2018 on a free transfer from PSG. He spent the 19/20 season on loan at PSV B in the Dutch second division. The Frenchman played twenty one times as they finished 18th. He is still currently at City, but is expected to go out on loan.

Ko Itakura -

Ko Itakura is a 23-year-old centre back who has been at City since January 2019, where he joined for an undisclosed fee from Japanese side Kawasaki Frontale, signing a three-and-a-half year deal. The day after he joined, he signed for Eredivisie side Groningen on loan, spending the second half of the 18/19 season and the 19/20 season at the club. He will now spend the 2020/21 season back at Groningen. He made twenty-two appearances in the Eredivisie last season.

The 6 ft 1 centre back is a good tackler, and loves doing so. He is quite quick, but lacks the distribution of a modern day centre back to fit in Guardiola's system, so it is unlikely he will ever feature for the first team.

Pedro Porro -

Porro is a Spanish right back who has recently joined Sporting Lisbon on loan for two years, with an option to buy. He joined from Girona, and was immediately loaned out to La Liga Real Valladolid last season. He made 13 appearances in La Liga, but performed badly.

Porro can play anywhere down the right hand side, and can even be deployed as a central midfielder if needs be. He seems to prefer playing at right wing back, using his pace and dribbling ability to get past players. He has the fitness to go up and down the pitch, and is very good at picking out a quick pass or cross. A move to Sporting could be a good move for him, as long as he gets the regular playing time he needs which he didn't get at Valladolid.

Daniel Arzani -

Daniel Arzani is a 21-year-old Australian winger who joined City from Melbourne City in the summer of 2018. Since then he has spent the last two season at Scottish champions Celtic, but he only made two appearances across his time in Glasgow, as an injury hit two years hindered his development. The youngest ever player to appear for his country in a World Cup, Arzani was just 19 when he came on as a substitute in all three of the socceroos games at the 2018 World Cup in Russia. He has now gone out on loan ot FC Utrecht in the Eredivisie for the 20/21 season.

Arijanet Muric -

Arijanet Muric is a 21-year-old goalkeeper from Kosovo, and has been at City since March 2015, signing from Swiss side Grasshopper Zurich. He has been sent out on loan twice, first spending the 18/19 season on loan at Dutch side NAC Breda, where he played as backup and only started one game as they finished bottom of the league. He then went out on loan to Nottingham Forest in the Championship, but again struggled, making key mistakes in the first four games of the season (keeping one clean sheet) before Forest brought in Brice Samba, meaning Muric was dropped to the bench for the rest of the season. At this moment in time Muric is still at City, but expect him to go out on loan again this season.

Ante Palaversa -

Ante Palaversa is a 20-year-old defensive midfielder, who joined City in January 2019 for a fee believed to be around £5.5 million form former Croatian champions Hajduk Split. He then the entirety of last season on loan At Belgian top flight side KSV Oostende, where he made 19 appearances. He has now gone out on loan to La Liga side Getafe for the season.

Tosin Adarabioyo -

Tosin Adarabioyo is a 22-year-old centre back who has come through City's academy, and has been out on loan twice. He has made a couple of Cup appearances for City, before spending the 18/19 season out on loan with West Bromwich Albion, playing 29 times as they reached the play-offs. He then had a successful stint at Blackburn Rovers last season, playing 34 times. There are rumours that he may be playing with the first team next season, but he will probably end up going out on loan again, with Everton reportedly interested.

Slobodan Tedic is a 20-year-old striker who joined City in January 2020 for a fee believed to be around £2.7 million, from Serbian top flight side Cukaricki. The Serbian was immediately loaned back to Cukaricki for the rest of the 19/20 season. Tedic has played for Serbia's U17's, U19's and U21's, but is yet to score. He spent the second half of the season on loan at Championship Middlesbrough, helping them to avoid relegation. He made eleven appearances, producing no goal contributions. The German U21 international has now gone out on loan to Former Belgian champions Anderlecht, managed by City legend Vincent Kompany.

Nmecha can play anywhere across the front line, primarily as a striker but can play on both wings. He is someone who is always in the right place at the right time, a proper poacher. He is also a very good dribbler, although his passing and crossing could use some work. He will be hoping to impress fr Kompany, and can hopefully have a good spell which can kick-start his career,
