Everton see off Salford in fine fashion to progress in Carabao Cup

Everton ran out 3-0 winners in the Carabao Cup second round against Salford to progress into the third round to set up a tie away at League one Fleetwood.

Everton were looking to build on an impressive victory against Tottenham on Sunday by progressing to the third round of the Carabao Cup,

Everton took the lead very early on through a Michael Keane header from a Gylfi Sigurdsson corner, deservedly leading after a dominant first fifteen minutes.

Jarrad Branthwaite had to limp off after what seemed to be an injury to his achilles in the 23rd minute, being replaced by Lucas Digne at centre back.

The toffee's maintained there dominance right through to half time, restricting the League Two side to just two shots. They were keeping the ball nicely, maintaining a lot of the ball, but unfortunately not making any clear cut opportunities. Everton's best chance from the rest of the first half was from Bernard, who curled what looked to have doubled their lead, before Salford 'keeper Hladky managed to get his fingertips to push it past the post.

Things started to get a lot more lively in the second half, the first clear cut opportunity of the half coming from the home side, with Gylfi Sigurdsson using his crossing abilities to whip one right to an open Moise Kean at the back post, only for him to fire it against the crossbar.

Everton continued to push for a second, and nearly scored again, with good work from Anthony Gordon down the left hand side, who put a ball in which ended up at the feet of Bernard, who smashed it against the post.

The first decent chance for Salford came soon after the ball was looped over to Ashley hunter who then laid the ball off for Richie Towell, only for him to smash it over.

Everton then had another chance as debutant left back Nkounkou put a cross in a the back post after a surging run to the back post, but Theo Walcott couldn't quite stretch far enough to get a foot on it.

Then with fifteen minutes to go, Everton finally doubled their lead after Anthony Gordon dragged a cross back for Gylfi Sigurdsson, who slot it in the bottom right hand corner from six yards out, capping off a fine display from the Icelandic as he scored his 100th goal in English football.

Everton almost made it three, with Nkounkou playing the ball across the box, before it bumbling around and ending up at veteran Theo Walcott, who forced another good save from Vaclav Hladky.

Jonjoe Kenny then tried a speculative effort in an attempt to get his first goal for the club, curling it just over the bar from the edge of the box.

Sigurdsson came close to scoring his second, just grazing the post with a low shot from the edge of the area.

Anthony Gordon then also came close to scoring a speculative effort, before being fouled in the box by Bruno Andrade to give Everton their third goal, with Moise Kean scoring a calm and composed Jorginho-esque penalty into the top left corner, which will surely help his confidence.

Everton then should have scored a fourth, with them both rattling the woodwork twice, with Moise Kean heading against the post, before Anthony Gordon hit the bar on the follow up.

Overall, a comfortable victory for Everton where they should have scored more, with Salford not really managing to break through. Everton continue a fine start to the season, with the likes of Anthony Gordon and Niels Nkounkou impressing down the left hand side for Everton.

Man of the Match - Gylfi Sigurdsson

Everton next face Premier league new boys West Bromwich Albion in the lunchtime kick-off on Saturday, meanwhile Salford travel to Grimsby in League Two.
